History
In 1884, Amdahl Beef was established and homesteaded in Flandreau, South Dakota. The Amdahl family has farmed and finished out cattle for 135 years. In 1972, Oliver Amdahl (Tim Amdahl’s father) started marketing his own beef through a reefer truck delivering to restaurants and grocery stores across the northern midwest marketing beef into South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1972, Tim Amdahl purchased his first registered cattle and continued to farm and finish out cattle while also growing his registered herd. In 1976, Tim Amdahl (TJ and JD’s father) won the Star Farmer of America for his excellence in beef, marketing and promotion of agriculture and beef cattle. In 1978, Tim Amdahl was the first one to do embryo transplant work in South Dakota.
Through 1972 to 1992 Tim Amdahl continued to grow and improve his registered Angus herd, reaching 250 head of Angus cows. In 1991 the Amdahl Ranch was moved to New Underwood, South Dakota where they made great genetic improvements and advances marketing 160 bulls annually. The Amdahl Ranch has since continued to strive for overall herd efficiency and productivity and have since bought the former Baker Hereford ranch 12 miles north of Rapid City, South Dakota where they continue to annually market 200 Angus and Hereford bulls and females.
The Breeding Program
For the past 47 years the Amdahl cowherd has focused strongly on the selection of productivity, efficiency, breed back, longevity with the strong carcass traits to meet the industries demands. Through that, they have continued their embryo program with the top females that have met all of their rigorous demands. Because the females are the backbone to the entire beef industry, Amdahl’s focus strongly on the longevity of the mother cow, which is a crucial trait to ensure profitability that can be overlooked in bull selection. They make sure our females offer high production ratios, udder quality, structural soundness such as feet, legs and a correct top line.
On November 23rd 2019, Amdahl Angus and Hereford host their annual bull and female sale. Genetics offered in their Hereford program include predominantly, line one horned Herefords that are strengthened with traits such as foot soundness, fertility, heavy milking and docility. The Angus program is one of the nations top cowherds for the combination of percent of body weight weaned off, fleshing ability, longevity and docility.
